چکیده

These results demonstrate that vim entin is present in the epithelial cells of renal tubules involved in foci of nonsup-purative interstitial nephritis, one of the most common in-flammatory processes of the bovine kidney.' Vimentin is frequently expressed in human renal cell carcinomas, 10 which are assumed to arise from tubular cells, and in tubular epi-thelial cells during the course of various nonneoplastic renal diseases in humans beings and rats.' The metanephric origin of the renal epithelial cells may explain the possible expression of vim entin in tubules affected by several pathologic conditions, such as tumoral dedifferentiation, active regen-eration, or damage due to interstitial infiltration, and sclerosis , In such conditions, tubular cells reexpress the intermediate filament protein present in the embryonal mesenchyme, namely vimentin.'? In vitro studies have demonstrated that the expression of vimentin in bovine renal epithelial cells may be induced by the presence oflow cell density in monolayer culture-or when desmosomal cell contacts are disrupted. 3 These observations suggest that the presence of vimentin in tubular epithelial cells is influenced by mutual contact and the extracellular environment.' The changes that occur in the peritubular environment in foci of interstitial nephritis probably act as the promoters of vim entin expression in tubular cells. The biological significance of this phenomenon is not understood, although it indicates a severe modification of the tubules during the course of interstitial nephritis. Further studies are needed to determine if this structural modification may interfere with the functional activity of the nephron. Assignment of laminin heavy chains using the lectin Ricinus communis agglutinin-1.

Using high-resolution PAGE and Western-blotting techniques the lectin Ricinus communis agglutinin-1 (RCA-1) was tested for its ability to recognize laminin subunits from the mouse Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm (EHS) tumour and from bovine cardiac and skeletal muscle. Biotinylated RCA-1 recognized both the A and B chains of purified EHS-tumour laminin with a sensitivity comparable to anti-(EHS laminin) ...

Aberrant lectin-binding activity of immunoglobulin G in serum from rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Structural studies of oligosaccharide chains of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in serum have revealed a specific galactosylation deficiency associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Using a two-site lectin-immunofluorometric assay, I studied the interaction of IgG with immobilized lectins. Compared with control IgG, IgG purified from RA patients' sera bound up to 40-fold more strongly to immobilized B...

Lectin-binding proteins in nuclear preparations from rat liver and malignant tumors.

Lectin binding [concanavalin A, biotinylated ricinus communis agglutinin, and biotinylated succinylated wheat germ agglutinin (B-SWGA)] was used to detect the glycosylated proteins associated with a residual protein fraction [insoluble in 4% sodium dodecyl sulfate and termed the nuclear residual fraction (NRF)] or with nuclear matrix preparations from normal rat liver, azo dye (3'-MeDAB)-induce...

Lectin-mediated agglutination of amphibian embryonic cells.

Dissociated blastula cells of Xenopus laevis are agglutinated with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), concanavalin A (Con A) and, to a lesser extent with soya bean agglutinin (SBA). They are not agglutinated with fucose-binding protein. Neuraminidase treatment of cells enhances their agglutinability with RCA and SBA, but has no effect on Con A- and WGA-mediated aggl...

Lectin histochemistry of feline sphingomyelinosis.

The brain from a Siamese cat with sphingomyelinosis was examined with lectin histochemistry. Swollen neurons were stained with Canavalia ensiformis agglutinin (Con A). Some of them were also stained with Ricinus communis agglutinin-I (RCA-I) and Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I (UEA-I). A small number of axonal spheroids and glia cells were positive for Con A, RCA-I, UEA-I and wheat germ agglutinin....

Captured Proteins by Immobilized Ricinus Communis Agglutinin in Rabbit Plasma

The Sepharose CL-6B column was prepared to separate ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA) from the crude extract of castor beans due to the gel carrier contains a large amount of β-galactoside bond. RCA were immobilized on activated Sepharose 4B to make an immobilized RCA column, which was used to capture the proteins in rabbit plasma by affinity chromatography. Results showed that two polypeptides...
